What has me spitting mad is the NFL. Yup. Football so if you’re not a fan you may excuse yourself from the following rant.
Sean Payton, the head coach for the Saints organization, has been suspended for the entire 2012-2013 season. Why? Because of some bounty nonsense the league has come up with. The charges are not completely frivolous mind you, but the fine is over the top. This is where the whispers of conspiracy theories come in. And I am all for it at this point. Because what they did is no different than what many other teams do. I'm spitting mad because the NFL chooses to enforce rules when it is convenient for them to do so. Like now, at a most crucial time for Who Dat nation.
On February 3, 2013 Super Bowl XLVII is scheduled to take place in the Big Easy. There has never been a home team, a true home team, who has played and hosted the Super Bowl before. And I’m beginning to suspect the NFL wants to make sure the Saints don’t become the first. Sure, there were a couple of close calls. Super Bowl XIV was played in Pasadena, a short drive from downtown LA though not the same city. The then LA Rams were fortunate enough to play but not win. There was also Super Bowl XIX at Standford, another short drive from San Francisco where the 49ers were fortunate enough to beat my Dolphins that year.
Yet the chance for a true home team to make the big game and win is rare. Who Dat nation knows we have the best chance this year coming up. Drew Brees is at the peak of his career, the team at its apex, the city behind them and chomping at the bit to prove that it was not a fluke the first time around.
We want to win; we want to do it spectacularly, like everything else down here in the bayou. We want parades for weeks, we want carnival season to revolve around our boys, and we want to see news coverage once more of police officers hugging strangers in a spontaneous moment of unity. We want others to share our love for our city and team, a sea of black and gold as far as the eye can see. My final thoughts before I crank up , Rage Against the Machine :
